Music Lessons for Adults

"I always dreamed of playing the piano. I didn't have the opportunity when I was young"

"I took lessons for a couple years and then stopped. I've always regretted that."

"My child loves music and I want to take lessons with her."

"i've always wanted to just sit down and play like I see others do."

Each student enters piano lessons with different interests, needs and goals. A four year old starting lessons for the first time will have very different needs than a 67 year old revisiting piano after several years hiatus. We make it a priority to get to know you on a personal level and to become familiar with your interests, strengths, challenges and goals. We do not treat every student the same in terms of what and how we teach.  Each student is an individual and we work with you to create a plan that fits your needs and musical preferences. At the first lesson your teacher will ask questions about your favorite music, aspirations, background, etc. and then create a plan and goals to help you accomplish whatever musical dreams you have for yourself or your child.

FAQs

WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC DO YOU TEACH?
All styles from classical to blues to jazz to rock. Whether you want to learn Bach or Alicia Keys, our teachers are happy to help you become the musician you want to be.

WHAT ABOUT THE BASICS?  WILL I LEARN THOSE?
Like any sport, their are basic drills and skills you will want to attain in order to play the music you love and have fun doing it.  Your teacher will help you develop your tool box of basic skills according to your goals. Your tool box may include: reading, writing, technique, theory, transposition, improvisation and playing by ear. And, you will still incorporate your favorite songs into lessons.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
Most students will play or sing some simple songs within the first few weeks of lessons. However, there is so much repertoire and skills to learn that you may well end up finding this becomes a life long pursuit. If you want to become an expert, definitely plan on putting in 10,000 hours!

DO I NEED A PIANO?
You do not have to have a piano at home to take lessons. A simple full size electronic keyboard will suffice for the first 6 months. When you are ready to get a piano, your teacher will recommend some good brands and give you a checklist of things to look for.
For singing lessons it is helpful to have a piano to get your pitch, play melody lines and accompany yourself if you are taking piano lessons too!

DO I HAVE TO PERFORM at RECITALS?
You will never be required to perform however, there are many benefits to sharing your music with other piano students, family and friends. Your practice is more focused when you have a short term performing goal, you develop rich friendships with other students who are learning just like you, you acquire complimentary skills such as comfort in front of an audience. Though not required, you will have the opportunity to play in fun, relaxed recitals and master classes.

HOW OLD IS TOO OLD TO START LESSONS?
The beauty of music is that you can start and develop at any age. Of our adult students, some are complete beginners, others are returning after a long hiatus and still others want to prepare for competitions and night club gigs. Lessons are different for every student. We create lessons that fit your needs and interests.
